Remember that time when you were playing GTA V and
Firstly, go
and buy GTA V.
Secondly, meet Kendrick
Lamar.
Kendrick
Lamar sits on the Hip-Hop spectrum right in the middle, somewhere in between
Immortal Technique and 50 Cent. Kendrick has created a soulful, West Coast
influenced sound with well sought out production from Pharrell, Just Blaze and
Dr. Dre. This sound is combined with evocative and incredibly catchy lyrics,
hooks and samples.
Taken from the first
song off the mixtape"O(verly) D(edicated)", Kendrick showcases
his philosophy when it comes to rap music, "My Uncle doing life,
inside prison he wasn't wrapped too tight, He told me to rap about life, not
rap niggas." This is why we like him.
From the same South L.A. city of Compton as N.W.A, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, Kendrick was surrounded by Hip-Hop during his younger years. He saw Tupac and Dr. Dre record the video to the iconic "California Love", which proved to be a huge influence in his decision to start rapping and release his first mixtape "Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year)" at 16.
In the years since then, he has exploded ferociously onto the Hip-Hop scene. "Section 80" is awesome. His most recent album "Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City", is awesome. My favourite album of last year, hands down.
His
music is spreading around the world super fast and he is constantly progressing
onto bigger and better things. He's been globetrotting with Kanye West
supporting him on the Yeezus tour. He smashed the BET awards
winning five awards and most memorably caused tremors through Hip-Hop when he
lyrically 'murdered' J.Cole, Drake and even Big Sean who featured on the same
track 'Control'.
His next venture is entitled 'Black
Hippy', which is a rap collective with Kendrick, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul,
Schoolboy Q. Expect to be hearing a lot of them in the next couple
months.
So
now you know.
